Just like any major home improvement project, there are questions you need to answer to get the best value for your money and ensure your happiness with the end result.
1. How do I decide which pavilion size to purchase?
One of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a new pavilion is the size. You’ll want to carefully evaluate the available space and choose the size that best fits with your existing landscape elements, including other outdoor structures. You’ll want the structure to naturally blend with the surroundings without overwhelming the space.
You may wish to stake out your intended location and observe your yard over several days to a week. Doing this can help you recognize typical traffic patterns or things that might get in the way. Staking out space will also help you to visualize the furniture, plants, or other accessories you may want to add and how much interior space.
2. What materials will you use to construct my pavilion?
The appearance, strength, and durability of your new pavilion will depend on the materials used to build it. Most pavilions are built from wood which, depending on the stain, can provide a variety of looks from rich and elegant, to warm and rustic.
At Country Lane, we build our pavilions from either #1 grade treated, Southern Yellow Pine, and Western Red Cedar. Both wood varieties provide a beautiful appearance while ensuring strength and durability. Vinyl styles are also popular finishes to consider for a low maintenance option.
3. Will you provide installation for my new pavilion?
If you’re not the do-it-yourself type or simply don’t have the time to install a new pavilion on your own, you’ll want to ask if the company provides installation services.
It’s usually a good idea to have a dealer, manufacturer, or licensed contractor do the installation. Manufacturers know your new pavilion better than anyone and are in the best position to perform the installation. Country Lane offers professional installation within 250 miles of our facility. If you’re farther away, we can work with your local contractor or you.
4. Are there any special zoning requirements for building my pavilion?
While pavilions are usually not considered buildings in the conventional sense, some county or township ordinances could come into play when adding one to your property. If you live in a development community, you may also need to follow the rules and regulations set forth by your homeowners’ association (HOA).
Zoning or HOA regulations may limit the size of your new pavilion in length or height. Other regulations may govern how close it can be to other structures, roads, shared walking paths etc.
Some communities also limit the amount of impermeable surface area you can have on your property. Impermeable surfaces include areas where water is not absorbed, such as asphalt driveways, concrete walkways or paver patios. Since your new pavilion will be installed on a concrete slab, that won’t absorb water, this could be a potential concern.
We suggest checking with your local township, they will know what is and is not allowed. You’ll also want to contact your homeowners’ association before you begin your pavilion project.
5. Can I use an existing concrete pad, patio or deck as the base for my new pavilion?
The size and thickness of your existing concrete pad, patio, or deck will determine whether it will make a good base for your new pavilion. Be sure to consult with your builder, dealer, and township to ensure your site is sufficient.
Be certain your pad, patio, or deck is able to support the weight of the structure will keep your Pavilion in good shape for years to come.
6. What should I do to prepare for the delivery and installation of my new pavilion?
Site preparation guidelines will vary depending on the size, weight of your new pavilion, and the local guidelines. The two most common foundation methods involve installation of concrete frost footers or a concrete pad. Check with your local area for requirements. Proper installation of a solid foundation for attaching the posts of your pavilion is crucial. Always check with your local zoning board for assistance.

Most builders and dealers will only deliver a new pavilion to a site that is fully prepared for installation. It may be necessary to hire a contractor to complete the site preparation for you. Be sure to ask your builder or dealer if they recommend a particular contractor or can assist with site preparation.
While buying a pavilion may be one of the most rewarding purchases you’ll ever make, it pays to ask the right questions before choosing a pavilion for your needs. Determine the proper size, ensure your pavilion is made from the right materials, check local zoning and HOA building requirements, determine how your new pavilion will be installed, and make the right site preparations, can go a long way to ensuring you’re happy with your new pavilion this season and in all the seasons to come.
